The Phillips School, Georgetown
Window Reproduction
Twenty over-sized school windows face north to Olive Street in Georgetown. Suffering years of neglect, the windows needed new sash while the frames could be restored.
The Craftsmen Group fabricated reproduction sash for all openings out of Bolivian mahogany, perfectly replicating all profiles and proportions of the original 1870's windows. The original pulleys were restored and traditional interlocking weather strip used to enhance the durability and performance of these lovely windows.
It's the glass which sometimes makes the job, as it did here. Georgetown, one of the nation's first neighborhoods conscious of its unique history is today demanding of its residents and their plans to modify the streetscape. Our windows received Bendheim glass, as German window pane made by hand blowing in order that it collects subtle imperfections similar to 19th century float glass. The project has left the city block with a warm and textured feel that has become part of the intimacy of Georgetown.
