Door and Window Reproduction
The unusual initial call sounded like this, "We would like to restore these 1912 townhouses back to as they were in 1956". Luckily for us and the streetscape, the facades was intact and original in 1956. The Church of Scientology is going back to structures around the world where their founder first worked. They are restoring them to look and feel as they did when he was there. We were glad to be a part, building the reproduction mahogany sash and doors you see here. We worked off photos for the doors and neighboring structure for the window details.
The branches obscuring the facade are part of a magnolia planted by L. Ron Hubbard in 1956. It was a sapling in the photos used for door reproduction and an important part of this unusual historic site.
The details of this structure, like others around Dupont Circle are clearer, more masculine and less curvilinear than was common in structures of the 1880's, 90's and early 20th century. Herein lies budding modernism.
