Original Mistakes & Bad Repairs

Yep, that’s wire. Well, it kept things sort of whole until we came along. This sash required reproduction, as the damage could not be restored.

This is auto body filler. It is not compatible with wood. It tends to promote decay right where it connects the wood. See the movie section for footage of the removal of this piece and you will see why we never use it on anything.

Note the long cross grain joint at the head of this sash at left. That is too much grain at 90 degrees, and the cracks due to shrinkage – that board is too wide not to be floating. This was from a well made building that otherwise had sound details. Note the drip edge housed in dado at right - a slot or trench cut into the surface of a piece of machined wood. This is, in contrast, an excellent detail, one we continue to use today.
